The holidays can be stressful enough without worrying about how to handle this time of the year from as a business person. How can you best handle the holidays from the business side?
DTN Productions has put together an audio podcast that does a great job of covering the basics. Here are some of the main points:
Holiday Cards
Yes, holiday cards. Even if you think ‘holiday’ versus ‘Christmas’ is too politically correct, cards expressing general ‘best wishes for the season’ type sentiments really are best for your business mailing list. Cards should go out the first week of December, and a hand-signed card shows your client or prospect that they’re worth a little extra effort.
Holiday Gifts
Some clients may be worth a gift. Make sure first that you’re following your company’s policy on gift-giving. When choosing a gift, sometimes the best idea is to make the gift something that can be shared: chocolates, cookies, or the ever-popular popcorn tin. Don’t send anything with your logo; this isn’t the time for shameless self promotion.
If you receive a gift, also confirm it’s okay to accept under company policy, and always remember to send a written thank you note.
Parties
What if you’re invited to a client’s home or even the bosses home? RSVP promptly, and never show up empty-handed. A shareable gift is also best in this scenario: a nice box of chocolates, or a bottle of wine should be appropriate.
What about the office holiday party or a client’s gathering? First and most importantly, watch your alcohol intake. Your reputation is on the line and it’s up to you to remember that. Dress appropriately. ‘Holiday Casual’ generally means a little dressier than business casual. Since it’s the holidays, women can add a little sparkle to their outfit. But keep in mind that you’re still among peers or clients. Don’t be that person that everyone is talking about on Monday!
During the event, mingle! Especially at a client’s party, be prepared with topics to discuss and introduce yourself to new people. Don’t spend the evening standing by the bar or the buffet table.
This is the perfect time for letting the people in your business life know that you’re thinking of and appreciate them. Enjoy the holidays and get ready for a successful 2010!
