According to a new report, online ads can be an effective way to reach women.  The Unicast “What Women Want from the Web Report” shows 62 percent of women notice and/or interact with online advertising.  Of women surveyed, 95 percent plan to go online, and their plans include social activities and shopping. Women 18-24 use the web more than other age groups.

Planned online activities:

  • Connect with family and friends:  76%
  • Keep up with the news:  67%
  • Shop for sales/compare prices:  64%
  • Entertainment-play games, listen to music, watch TV/movies:  59%
  • Research travel/vacations:  48%

Nearly half of the women surveyed said they are interested in ads that include sales or discount codes, 31 percent like ads that include a contest or other entry to win a prize. The top products women most notice ads for are entertainment, food and beverage, health and beauty, and fashion/clothing.

Women notice ads for things they’re already interested in: 56 percent of women looking for entertainment options online have noticed an online entertainment ad in the past month. Forty six percent of women planning to research travel have noticed a travel ad.

The report calls American women CHO – Chief Household Officers. They make 93 percent of food purchases, 92 percent of vacation purchases and control $7 billion in annual spending. This makes them a key audience for any advertising, and understanding what they’re looking for and  respond to online will help you create successful online campaigns.
