After spending more than a year telling you all of the bad ad spending forecasts and final numbers, it’s nice to have positive news to report. We recently covered the positive year-over-year numbers for spot radio, now U.S. magazine page and revenue numbers show a second quarter increase – the first growth in 2 1/2 years.
The Publisher’s Information Bureau is reporting second-quarter revenue is up 5.7 percent over last year to $5.21 billion, and pages increased 0.8 percent. Looking at the first half of the year overall, revenue is up 1.2 percent and pages are down 4 percent.
This second quarter improvement is due in large part to increased ad spending from the auto makers, with the industry enjoying a 28 percent jump in pages and a 41 percent jump in revenue from that category alone. Home furnishings and supplies, technology and food industries have also increased spending this year.
